Introduction:
Restriction enzymes are a special protein found in bacteria. Restriction enzymes are a defense mechanism that defends the cell from viruses by cutting the injected virus DNA at parts called palindromes. The process used to analyze DNA is called gel electrophoresis, the process starts with DNA being placed in a gel substance which then sends through a electric current flow, causing smaller strands to move faster than the longer ones, and shows different shades of it, but lets us determine the length of the DNA because of the movement of the fragment. It is called RFLP ( Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism).
The purpose of the lab is to analyze the DNA of different suspects using gel electrophoresis and to compare it with the DNA found at the crime scene. To determine the suspect is to match up the DNA to the crime scene and those closest to the match is the killer. The purpose of the restriction enzyme is to section out the fragments to there specific code of genes, also giving different lengths, then a blue dye is added to the DNA letting us see the chart. Which finally results in a chart with the different band or fragments of the DNA samples and we can use the chart to find out who the killer was.
I would predict who it was..but that is just not right. ha
Results:
Chloe, suspect #3 was the killer, the fragments matched the crime scene DNA.
Discussion:
Using gel electrophoresis, the different DNA parts were spaced out by size within the gel, as stated previously the shorter ones moved farther and the longer ones were farther back. Using the gel we could compare it to the crime scene DNA and figured out that it was #3
Errors:
bad pipetting ( shaky hands)
dirty DNA
